How to Inspect a Used Excavator Before Buying: 20-Point Checklist

Purchasing a used excavator can be a major investment for any construction or mining business. To ensure you're getting a reliable machine and avoiding hidden repair costs, a thorough technical inspection is mandatory.

1. The Foundation: Undercarriage Inspection

The undercarriage often accounts for up to 50% of an excavator's lifetime maintenance costs. Check the track links, rollers, and idlers for excessive wear. Look for signs of 'snaking' in the tracks, which indicates worn pins and bushings.

2. The Heart: Engine and Powertrain

Start the engine from a cold state. Listen for abnormal knocks or whistles. Check the color of the exhaust: white smoke could mean coolant leakage, while blue smoke often indicates engine oil consumption. Verify there is minimal 'blow-by' from the crankcase breather.

3. The Muscle: Hydraulic System

Examine all hydraulic cylinders for leaks or scoring on the chrome rods. Test the cycle times of the boom, arm, and bucket. A machine with healthy pumps will maintain its speed even when the oil reaches working temperature.
